Not Horny? Why Your Sex Drive May Be Flat
When your sex drive goes flat for no obvious reason, your nervous system might be stuck in a defensive freeze response. This guide breaks down how freeze takes arousal offline and gives you a practical physical exercise to help your body thaw out.

It might be time for sex. You kind of know you should want to want it...but you're just not turned on. You aren't necessarily feeling anxious or stressed in the moment—you just feel flat.
It makes no sense. You're into your partner, you aren't depressed and your relationship is fine.
Your body might be stuck in a survival response most guys never learn about: freeze. This automatic reflex shuts down physical arousal even when everything on the outside looks perfectly fine. Turning off that fear signal lets your body work the way it already knows how. This guide shows you what the research says about the freeze response and how to help your system thaw out so you can feel turned on again.
Signs of a Nervous System Freeze Response
When we talk about the stress response, most guys know two options: fight or flight. But there's a third option known as freeze.
Your system drops into a freeze state when fight or flight doesn't feel like a realistic option. To minimize a perceived threat, your body basically shuts down. You don't fight, you don't run, you just go still.
In the bedroom, this freeze response doesn't look like dramatic panic. It just looks like zero arousal. You notice a complete lack of interest, no physical sensation and absolutely no momentum. Your system is just trying to protect you. It misinterprets performance pressure or old relationship stress as a threat, so it pulls the plug on your sex drive to keep you safe.
Why Emotional Shutdown Ruins Arousal
Dr. Peter Levine, a leading expert on somatic stress, explains that trauma and survival loops aren't just mental concepts. They are physical states that stay locked inside the body when we can't respond effectively to a threat.
Animals in the wild naturally discharge this survival energy after surviving a stressful event. You can see it when a dog gives a massive physical shake after a close call or a stressful interaction. Humans rarely do that. When we feel stuck, trapped or powerless in our lives or past relationships, we tend to bottleneck that stress inside our muscles.
That survival energy stays locked up. In your everyday life, this can show up as emotional shutdown or feeling disconnected from your partner. In the bedroom, it shows up as physical numbness. Your system simply isn't registering that the room is safe enough to feel pleasure.
A client came to me after his high sex drive completely disappeared practically overnight. His desire stayed completely gone for a couple of years. We started working together, and within a few sessions, his mental interest in sex came back. He was excited about the progress and ready to get back out there, but his body still wasn't participating. Physically, he was still numb. We had to use specific physical tools to thaw out his nervous system before his body was ready to show up for sex again.
How to Break Out of Freeze Mode Naturally
You can't break out of a freeze response with raw willpower, and forcing yourself to try harder only makes your system tighter. You have to use a slow, body-first approach to show your nervous system that the danger has passed.
A highly effective way to do this is inspired by Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE), a process developed by Dr. David Berceli. This approach is designed to safely activate the body's natural tremor reflex, allowing your muscles to shake out that stored survival energy.
This simple version helps tire out the large muscle groups where we store stress, triggering a natural release that tells your system it's safe to unwind.
Step 1: Tire Out the Main Muscle Groups
Place your back flat against a wall and slide down into a squatting position. Your legs should be at about a 90-degree angle, exactly like you're sitting in an invisible chair. Hold this wall sit for five minutes, or until your quads start to burn intensely. The goal is to get these large thigh muscles thoroughly tired out.
Step 2: Set Up the Release Pose
Immediately lie flat on your back on the ground. Put the soles of your feet together, let your knees fall open to the sides and lift your hips up into a bridge pose. Hold this bridge position with your legs open for one full minute.
Step 3: Trigger the Tremor Reflex
Lower your butt back down to the ground. Very slowly begin to draw your knees back together. Move by fractions of an inch. If your legs start to tremble or shake at any point, stop moving and let the trembling happen until it naturally passes.
Step 4: Trace the Shaking Response
Once your knees are all the way together, reverse the movement. Very, very slowly begin to open your legs back up. Keep your movements incredibly slow. When you notice a spot that triggers a strong shaking response, pause right there and let your muscles vibrate.
Once your legs are completely open, bring them back up and together again, pausing anywhere you get those strong shakes. Practicing this simple routine for a few days helps clear that stored tension from your system so your body can naturally warm back up in the bedroom.
How to Fix Low Sex Drive from Stress
If your body is stuck in a freeze state, it doesn't mean you've permanently lost your sex drive or stopped finding your partner attractive. Your system just doesn't feel ready yet. Practice letting your body discharge that old stress, and give yourself permission to take the pressure off.
If you suspect your bedroom blocks are driven more by performance anxiety and overthinking than a physical shutdown, you can find targeted mental exercises in my core guide: psychological ED treatments.
